For a standard flat wheel, incoming inspection is simple: outside diameter, overall thickness and bore size tell you most of what you need to know, because those three dimensions decide whether the wheel mounts correctly and runs true. Non-standard diamond grinding wheels follow a very different logic. Once a wheel is profiled, stepped, slotted or built on a custom base, the dimensions that actually govern grinding results are no longer visible at a glance — and a wheel that slides onto the spindle without complaint can still be the wrong wheel.
Mounting dimensions only confirm that the wheel can be fixed to the machine. They say nothing about the profile that will be transferred to the workpiece. On a non-standard diamond wheel, the working layer is the tool: its width, thickness and position define the grinding allowance, the form accuracy and the surface finish of every part produced. A step height that is off by a few tenths of a millimetre, or a working layer placed on the wrong end face, produces scrap from the first component onward — and because the wheel physically fits, the error is easy to miss until parts start failing inspection.
For structurally complex wheels, the following dimensions should be verified against the confirmed drawing or approved sample on arrival:
| No. | Dimension | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Working layer width | Controls the contact area and the width of the ground form |
| 2 | Working layer thickness | Determines usable tool life and achievable depth of cut |
| 3 | Step height | Sets the reference plane for form grinding and shoulder clearance |
| 4 | Base thickness | Affects stiffness, deflection under load and total stack height on the spindle |
| 5 | Taper / bevel angle | Defines profile accuracy on angled grinding operations |
| 6 | Arc / radius position | Locates the radius relative to the reference face for profile grinding |
| 7 | Slot width and depth | Must match the mating feature in the fixture or workpiece |
| 8 | Working layer end face | Confirms which side carries the abrasive segment |
| 9 | Locating holes and mounting features | Ensures repeatable, concentric and correctly oriented mounting |
For complex non-standard wheels, dimension verification is not bureaucracy — it is the cheapest quality control available. A ten-minute check with a calliper and a height gauge costs far less than a batch of scrapped workpieces or a damaged spindle. Suppliers of custom diamond and CBN wheels should always ship the drawing revision with the goods, and our technical team is ready to support customers with dimension confirmation, tolerance review and application advice for both standard flat wheels and fully customised profiles.
